The Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) has made surprising progress in its first 12 months. In order for WAC to maintain long-term relevance, the entire WAC ecosystem must collaborate to ensure developers remain motivated and engaged, and that user experience is excellent.WAC Takes Center Stage at Mobile World Congress (MWC)
The mobile app store phenomenon spurred by Apple and Android’s success attracting developers coupled with challenges exploiting single-operator-run service delivery platforms (SDPs) has catalyzed a rethink among mobile operators and their suppliers about the optimal model for service innovation and delivery. The heightened level of activity surrounding the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) at MWC 2011 is a case in point.WAC was first introduced at last year’s MWC with much fanfare, including 24 operators and vendors signing up as inaugural members. Twelve months ago, there was widespread skepticism that WAC could find a path to relevance. At the time, Yankee Group was supportive of the WAC vision but skeptical that the industry could mobilize and execute in a short amount of time (see the February 2010 Yankee Group Report “Rethinking Telcos’ Role in Third-Party Ecosystems”).A check-in 12 months later reveals:- Major operators remain committed to supporting WAC.- WAC itself has grown to more than 60 members.-WAC 2.0 (supporting HTML5 and multimedia applications) debuted. Real implementations supporting the WAC platform are live.-12,000 applications are built and available in the WAC warehouse. This is good progress and surprisingly fast for an industry not known for being nimble
